Rank / Ranking
Where your website appears in search results for a given keyword.
The Tradie Take
Ranking is where your ad sits in the stack of business cards at the local hardware store. The top card gets picked up first. Being #1 on Google is like being on top of that stack. Nobody flips to page 2 of Google any more than they dig to the bottom of the card stack.
Definition
Ranking refers to your website's position in search engine results for a specific keyword. If you're #1 for "plumber Bondi," you're the first result people see. Most clicks go to the top 3 results - being on page 2 is like being invisible. Rankings are determined by Google's algorithm based on relevance, authority, user experience, and hundreds of other signals.
How It Works
- 1 Google evaluates your site against its ranking criteria for each search
- 2 Your ranking determines how visible you are to potential customers
- 3 Higher rankings = more clicks. #1 gets ~30% of all clicks.
- 4 Rankings fluctuate with algorithm updates, competition, and changes to your site
Tips for Tradies
- Focus on ranking for specific local keywords that match your services, not generic terms
- Track your rankings monthly - daily tracking leads to unnecessary panic
- Rankings are a means to an end. More important: are you getting calls from those rankings?
