Paid Ads

SEM (Search Engine Marketing)

Paid advertising on search engines like Google - commonly called Google Ads.

The Tradie Take

SEM is like paying for a prime spot on the front page of the phone book (remember those?). SEO is earning that spot by being the best. SEM gets you there today - but you pay every time someone opens to your page. SEO takes months but the traffic is free. Most tradies benefit from a mix of both: SEM for immediate leads, SEO for long-term growth.

Definition

SEM (Search Engine Marketing) is the practice of promoting your business by paying for placement in search engine results. The most common form is Google Ads (formerly Google AdWords), where you bid on keywords so your ad appears at the top of Google results when someone searches for your services. Unlike SEO (which gets you free traffic over time), SEM gets you immediate visibility - but you pay for every click. For tradies, SEM is useful for capturing emergency jobs and seasonal work where being first matters more than being cheapest.

How It Works

  • 1 You choose keywords your customers search for (e.g., "emergency plumber Sydney")
  • 2 You bid on those keywords - the amount you are willing to pay per click
  • 3 When someone searches your keyword, your ad can appear above the organic results
  • 4 You only pay when someone actually clicks your ad (Cost Per Click)

Tips for Tradies

  • SEM is great for emergency services where customers need someone NOW
  • Target specific services and locations, not broad terms
  • Use call extensions so customers can call directly from the ad
  • SEM and SEO work best together - use both for maximum coverage
