Heatmap

A visual map showing where people click and look on your website.

The Tradie Take

A heatmap is like looking at the wear patterns on your workshop floor. If there's a worn path from the door to the counter but not to the display rack, you know people are walking straight to the counter and ignoring your displays. Same with your website - heatmaps show you the worn paths.

Definition

A heatmap is a visual representation of where visitors click, move their mouse, or scroll on your website. The "hot" areas (red) show where people interact most. Cold areas (blue) show where they ignore. Heatmaps help you understand how people actually use your site - which buttons they click, how far they scroll, and what they ignore.

How It Works

  • 1 A tracking tool records mouse movements, clicks, and scrolling behaviour
  • 2 The data is overlaid on your page as a colour-coded heatmap
  • 3 Red areas = lots of interaction. Blue areas = people aren't looking there.
  • 4 You use this to improve your layout, button placement, and content structure

Tips for Tradies

  • Check if visitors are actually clicking your call-to-action buttons
  • See how far people scroll - if no one reaches the bottom, move key info up
  • Hotjar and Crazy Egg offer free heatmap tools for smaller sites
